Thursday3 :: CCF @ University of North Carolina-Wilmington

1. Tell us about your campus and Campus Ministry.

Though, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington is known for being located in a beach town, a reputation for being a great school is spreading quickly. The 12,000 students are less beach bum and more studious than most would think.  UNCW has the second largest campus in North Carolina, and they make every effort to keep it spacious and beautifully green. Since there isn’t a football team and many live off campus, at times it feels a little like a commuter school.  Extracurricular activities are encouraged, though.  There is a great international exchange program.  And as you might expect Marine Biology is big.

CCF at UNCW is here “to make disciples, disciple-makers, and quality friends.” We focus on making sure anyone who wants to can be met with 1-1 or 1-2 to dive deep in the foundations of the faith.  It is amazing to me how many people have skewed views of the most basic concepts. Thanks, Bible Belt!  We want people to be assured of their salvation and confidently share the good news with others.  We also have gained a love for international students.

2. What is your niche on campus and how are you reaching that niche?

Oddly enough, in the mist of hearing all of the statistics of students leaving the church in their college years, we have a lot of students that grew up around the church but didn’t see it for what it really is.  There are usually a series of ‘wow’ moments at odds with what many students home country church taught about God and His heart’s desire.

Again, we love international students.  Since Fall of ’06, we have loaned international students bicycles for however long they are here.  The idea came from Greg Swinney and the Nebraska ministries.  This semester we have over 40 bikes out to students.  This way we get to meet and serve them as soon as they arrive giving us an automatic connection.

To help give students an idea about what’s going on in the world, we pray for a country every Tuesday evening during our large group.  Using Operation World, we have a student briefly share the current state of the country and prayer requests.  It will take us about 10 years.

3. What is your dream on a napkin? What do you want CCF to look like in 5 yrs?

What I see when I sit back and dream about the future…

I see students in their shared ‘home’ (either dorm or academic building) praying together about their shared sphere of influence, letting God to do great things in and through them. I see a web of students on campus where older, more mature students are taking younger students under their wing and disciple them.  It’s as simple as that.  It’s fairly simplistic.

A bigger deal than it may sound at first, I dream for less programmed people, but more obedient people; fewer events allowing more time for loving our neighbors.
